Spohrs Notturno op. 34 stands historically between the popular wind serenades of Mozart and Dvorák. The weighty, large-scale work thus closes a repertoire gap in the MUSICA RARA catalogue, which already boasts a number of Spohr works for smaller wind settings. For his new edition, Jari Eskola has gone back to the autograph and the first edition, and was thus able to clear up a number of inaccuracies. The parts of the obsolete instruments flauto terzo and corno di basso were adapted to present-day instruments. Wind players are in for a treat when they rediscover this now almost forgotten masterwork.
