  • Description

The meeting of Giuseppe Verdi and Sylvia Plath: ... the great composer who hid his life from people, who tried to control or destroy all details of his private life which could seep through to the public... And the young author who struggled throughout her life with doubts and gnawing self-reproaches, whose inner life seemed fully reflected in her pitiless notes which were largely destroyed after her suicide by her husband Ted Hughes... Verdi and Plath meet here not in the "pure" space of the imagination, but in real life; they develop from their beings and their situation, from pleasure and sensuality, and with the events that come fast and furious, memories suddenly return, grow in intensity and determine the action.
(Juliane Votteler, program of the Stuttgart State Opera, Season 2000/01)
