The editors have been unable to locate any information about Spiegler save his dates. Nevertheless, his music is interesting enough to be revived in its own right, while also serving as an intriguing example of the mixture of Renaissance and Baroque approaches to form and style that resulted in the fully developed solo and ensemble sonata later in the 17th century. The work, presented here in a modern edition, is one of several works by Spiegler in the Stadtbibliothek in Breslau. The editors have used several of them in performance and feel that the present one is especially worthy of dissemination.
