Jean Sibelius composed his famous orchestral work "Finlandia" in 1899 as part of a cycle of historical pictures in several parts. It was only a few years later that he allowed the publication of the "Finlandia surroundings", which he divided into two suites of three movements each. With their symphonic grandeur and masterly instrumentation, the two "Scènes historiques"-Suites make highly effectivec concert pieces.
