This volume documents the chorales for choir and choral cantatas that Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed between 1827 and 1832. For a long time, this group of eight works was one of the least known parts of his oeuvre. Mendelssohn wrote these works, which are generally referred to as “choral cantatas” in a way that is as apt as it is problematic, in a limited but biographically important period. He was 18 when he composed the first and 23 when he composed the last. The chorale arrangements “Christe, du Lamm Gottes” MWV A 5, “Jesu, meine Freude” MWV A 6 and “Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten” MWV A 7 were composed in 1829 while he was still in Berlin. Five further, predominantly multi-movement works then followed between 1830 and 1832 on his great educational journey: “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden” MWV A 8, “Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her” MWV A 10, “Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich” MWV A 11, “Wir glauben all an einen Gott” MWV A 12 and finally “Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein” MWV A 13. In contrast to his five psalm cantatas, which were essentially composed later and as many as four were printed, the composer only had “Verleih uns Frieden” published from the chorale arrangements. This is a work that is popular to this day and occupies a unique position within the group in that it is based on a chorale in terms of text, but not the music.
