Undine lives as a foster daughter with the fisherman Tobias and his wife Marthe. But she encompasses something truly mysterious: she is actually the daughter of Kühleborn, the prince of the water spirits, who is trying a very daring experiment with her. He wants to find out if the people are good inside and can thereby give his daughter a soul. Water spirits live as soulless beings and can only gain souls through the unconditional loyalty of a loving person. So Undine meets the stranded knight Hugo, who seeks shelter with the fishermen during a storm surge, and the pair becomes closer. Despite the fact that Hugo once promised marriage to the Duke’s daughter, he marries Undine. After the wedding, he learns about the actual lineage of his beloved and promises her undying loyalty. But his promise is to be only short-lived. Bertalda manages to rekindle Hugo’s passion and win him back. Meanwhile, the betrayed Undine is brought by Kühleborn to her real homeland, the realm of the water spirits. Hugo is confused and remorseful. His luck with Bertalda will not hold and dreams of Kühleborn’s revenge pursue him. While the wedding is still in full swing, Undine appears. Hugo senses that his punishment is about to come, but he still loves Undine and hurries to her. Although Hugo deserves death, the prince has mercy and grants him and Undine a life together – in the realm of the water spirits.
