A Symphony dedicated to Europe in time of war

As a man and as a musician, in times of war, I felt helpless. I had the perception of not being able to stem, in my mind, the drama that we live in collectively. That was, until I said to myself: a composer has the sensitivity and the means to reflect artistically on what is happening and has a moral duty to look into the beyond. This is how, last April, the idea of writing my Symphony No. 2 “A new world” came to me: I wanted to try to give a musical response to the anguish that our continent has been going through in recent months and which seems to jeopardize the thousand year old civilization that we have produced, preserved and renewed for centuries.

It seemed important to me to do this immediately, right now, without waiting for reflection, deliberation, or for the long annals of history. This involved a certain amount of courage, perhaps even bravado; but, to comfort me, there was the awareness from day one, that I was not alone. Fellow musicians from many countries of the world (Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Italy) immediately shared the spirit and sense of the project, supporting me and pushing me to proceed. Thus, within a month and a half, the score was finished.

To make my idea clear and evident, I asked my librettist Piero Bodrato to dream up a text for the last movement: I wanted the voice of a mezzo-soprano to sing about our humanity, to sing for beauty, breath and life. And he wrote such wonderful words, which celebrate the gesture of singing itself as a human activity, common to every people, to every civilization, and capable of giving existence even to what did not exist moments ago. This is why we then chose the expression „A new world“ to appear in the title of the score: indeed, our words are words of trust, in a world today ravaged by fear. These are words for a new world, in which we want to imagine ourselves living in — a world that music, as always, promises us.

Una sinfonia dedicata all’Europa in tempi di guerra

Come uomo e come musicista in questi tempi di guerra mi sentivo impotente. Avevo la percezione di non riuscire ad arginare, nella mia mente, il dramma che viviamo collettivamente. Fino a che non mi sono detto: un compositore ha la sensibilità e i mezzi per riflettere artisticamente su quanto sta accadendo; e ha il dovere morale di guardare avanti. È stato così che, lo scorso aprile, è nata l’idea di scrivere la mia Sinfonia n. 2 “Un mondo nuovo”: volevo provare a dare una risposta musicale all’angoscia che attraversa in questi mesi il nostro continente e che sembra mettere a rischio la civiltà millenaria che abbiamo prodotto, custodito e rinnovato per secoli.

Mi è sembrato importante farlo subito, immediatamente, senza aspettare la riflessione, la sedimentazione, i tempi lunghi della Storia. Il che ha comportato una qualche dose di coraggio, forse persino di spavalderia; ma, a confortarmi, c’è stata la consapevolezza, fin dal primo giorno, che non ero solo, perché “fratelli musicisti” da molti paesi del mondo (Spagna, Francia, Germania, Polonia, Lituania, Italia) hanno da subito condiviso lo spirito e il senso del progetto, sostenendomi e spingendomi a procedere. Così, nel volgere di un mese e mezzo, la partitura era finita.

Per far sì che la mia idea fosse chiara, evidente, ho chiesto al mio librettista Piero Bodrato di inventare un testo per l’ultimo movimento: desideravo che la voce di un mezzosoprano cantasse la nostra umanità, cantasse la bellezza, il respiro, la vita. E lui ha scritto parole meravigliose, che celebrano il gesto stesso del cantare come attività umana, comune a ogni popolo, a ogni civiltà, e capace di far esistere anche ciò che sino a un istante prima non esisteva. Per questo abbiamo poi scelto l’espressione “Un mondo nuovo” da far comparire nel titolo della partitura: le nostre sono infatti parole di fiducia in un mondo oggi attraversato dalla paura, parole per un mondo nuovo, nel quale vogliamo pensare di vivere, un mondo che la musica, ancora una volta, ci promette.
