Mourning Dr. Gabriele Buschmeier

Breitkopf & Härtel mourns the death of Dr. Gabriele Buschmeier, who passed away on 14 July 2020 at the age of 65. Her unexpected and far too early death is not only a personal loss, Gabriele Buschmeier also leaves behind a large gap in German musicology.

Gabriele Buschmeier completed her studies of German philology, history and musicology in Cologne, Mainz and Paris. Subsequently, she completed her doctorate on “The Development of Scene and Aria in French Opera from Gluck to Spontini” and commenced her work on the Gluck Complete Edition – initially as a research assistant, later as a project manager. Since 1994, she has also worked as a coordinator of the musicological editions at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz.

Numerous honorary activities reflect the commitment that Gabriele Buschmeier has made to music. She was not only a member of the presidium of the Landesmusikrat Rheinland-Pfalz and vice president of the VG Musikedition, but also a member of the board of trustees of Villa Musica, a member of the SWR broadcasting council and treasurer on the board of the Society for Music Research.

With Gabriele Buschmeier, the music world has lost an outstanding personality who has dedicated herself to music and musicology with passion and professional competence.

Our thoughts and sympathy go out to her family and friends.
