Jean-Claude Zehnder (*1941)

Jean-Claude Zehnder, born in 1941, combines the practical work as an organist and organ teacher with the curiosity of the researcher.

After studying in Switzerland, he was trained in Vienna by Anton Heiller and in Amsterdam by Gustav Leonhardt. From 1972 to 2007, he headed an organ class at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, which produced numerous, now well-known musicians.

As organist at the Silbermann organ in Arlesheim Cathedral as well as with an international concert activity and CD recordings, Zehnder is present in concert life. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dortmund for his combination of scholarly research and practice.

Jean-Claude Zehnder is responsible for Volumes 4 (toccatas, passacaglia, individual works) and 8 (“18 chorales”) of Breitkopf & Härtel’s new edition of Bach’s organ works.
