The Andante in C major for flute and orchestra (K. 315) is associated with a commission Mozart received from the amateur flutist Ferdinand Dejean in Mannheim in December 1777. Mozart was asked, for a generous fee of 200 gulden, to compose for him “three small, easy and short concertos and a couple of quartets for the flute” (letter of December 10, 1777 to his father). But far away from his stern father, and head over heels in love with the sixteenyear- old Aloysia Weber, he failed to go about the commission with the necessary alacrity and fell behind schedule to such an extent that he had to adapt two of his Salzburg wind concertos for the new purpose. Our C major Andante (K. 315) was probably designed as an alternative middle movement for the Flute Concerto in G major (K. 313) that he had written for the name day of his sister “Nannerl” (July 26 1777). This obviated the need to change the orchestration of the middle movement from oboes to flutes, besides better accommodating the abilities of the work’s patron (see Henrik Wiese, , in: , 1997, pp. 149–156). This new edition of the score, produced in conjunction with the G. Henle Verlag, is based entirely on the autograph manuscript. Like so many of Mozart’s autographs, it is written in a very clear hand, practically without corrections. The very few editorial additions to the flute part are indicated as such in the score by parentheses and in case of slurs or ties with dotted lines. Accidentals that are incontestably missing were tacitly added. The editor hereby expresses his warm thanks to the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris for kindly providing the source.
