Franz Liszt often applied his skills as pianist and arranger to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The two paraphrases presented here were written in 1859 and 1862. They are closely connected through the basso continuo of the opening chorus of the cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen BWV 12 and were brought together into one volume by the editor for the Edition Breitkopf.
