The triumph of kindness

The most famous miracle attributed to Saint Agatha was that of saving Catania from an eruption of Mount Etna on 1 February 252: the lava was about to strike the city but it stopped right in front of a group of faithful carrying in procession the veil in which the body of young Agatha, tortured and killed by the Romans, had been wrapped.
Thinking back to this gesture, to the kindness before which an erupting crater halts its destructive fury, 'Imaginary Volcanoes' came to mind. Which, in my imagination, are friendly, gentle presences. Actually, they are forms of beauty.
As the titles of the individual movements indicate, theirs are 'Stars Flows', luminous and inoffensive; they express themselves in 'Soft Rumbles', which caress the ears and immediately become music; they emerge from the ground in 'Small Urban Craters', to be thought of as fountains in the middle of parks and gardens; and they produce 'Handmade Lapilli', turned and polished, splendid to look at and completely inoffensive.
The piece is dedicated to my son Martino, who turned twelve on the day the Teatro Bellini in Catania commissioned me to write this score and who, in his own way, is also an imaginary volcano, surprising and gentle.

Il trionfo della gentilezza

Il più celebre miracolo attribuito a Sant’Agata fu quello di salvare Catania da un’eruzione dell’Etna il 1 febbraio 252: la lava stava per investire la città ma si fermò davanti a un gruppo di fedeli che portava in processione il velo nel quale era stato avvolto il corpo della giovane donna, torturata e uccisa dai Romani.
Ripensando a questo gesto, alla gentilezza di fronte alla quale un cratere in eruzione arresta la sua furia distruttiva, mi sono venuti in mente dei “Vulcani immaginari”. Che, nella mia fantasia, sono presenze amichevoli, garbate. A dirla tutta, sono forme di bellezza.
Così come indicano i titoli dei singoli movimenti, le loro sono “Colate di stelle”, luminose e inoffensive; si esprimono con “Boati soffici”, che accarezzano le orecchie e diventano immediatamente musica; emergono dal suolo in “Piccoli crateri urbani”, da pensare come fontanelle in mezzo a parchi e giardini; e producono “Lapilli artigianali”, torniti e levigati, splendidi a vedersi e del tutto inoffensivi.
Il brano è dedicato a mio figlio Martino, che ha compiuto dodici anni nel giorno in cui il Teatro Bellini di Catania mi ha commissionato questa partitura e che, a suo modo, è un anche lui un vulcano immaginario, soprendente e gentile.
