I am fascinated by the idea of using music to portray something. Many composers in the past have utilized music to suggest the course of a river, a storm, the waves of the sea, a trek in the Alps, or the changing of seasons. It amuses me to think that with a musical score, one can also trace the face of a person.

Of course, it's not about retracing the lines, proportions, and colors of a face; the game lies in capturing its movements and transformations. Because this is what music can do: it allows us to listen to time and what happens within it. Music, indeed, expands or compresses time, puts time in the spotlight or hides it; music observes time and its most hidden secrets or offers us a concise, essential image of itself.

In Quattro modi di sorridere (Four Ways of Smiling), I attempted to portray the face of a beloved person through four moments in which enthusiasm, compassion, beauty, and (eventually) joy lead them to open up in a smile.
