This is the liturgically obligatory closing of Mozart, Requiem in D minor K. 626 based on Eybler/Suessmayr completed by H. C. Robbins Landon.
It is not known whether Mozart, like his future composer colleagues Dvorák, Fauré and Verdi, would have closed his Requiem with the liturgically obligatory "Libera me, Domine". Assuming that he would, Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm wrote such a piece in 1821 in a style that was as Mozartian as possible. Neukomm, who was born in Salzburg and studied with both Michael and Joseph Haydn, borrowed passages from Mozart's fragment for this. The "Mozart / Süssmayr / Neukomm Requiem" has since been successfully performed several times. "Its great success with the public and the press should encourage conductors to conclude Mozart's Requiem more often with Neukomm's 'Libera me, Domine'." (Mozart-Jahrbuch, December 1999).
