Like many works created in exile, this play by Brecht, written in California in the summer of 1943, had to wait many years for its first performance. This took place in Warsaw on 17 January 1957. Eisler composed the instrumental interludes for the production in Frankfurt am Main in 1959. The “Scenes from the Higher Spheres” were composed in 1961 for the French premiere in Lyon.
