The cantata “Gott, der Vater, wohn uns bei” is one of the few known purely choral cantatas by Johann Kuhnau. It is based on a chorale by Martin Luther, with identical wording in all verses with the exception of the first line. Kuhnau uses this by combining the three verses and setting them to music in a large-scale, single-movement concerto with a preceding sonata – a unique form in Kuhnau’s known vocal oeuvre.
The composition’s origins are obscure, but the use of the Luther chorale makes its intended use for the feast of Trinity clear. The number of voices mentioned in the source indicates a soloistic performance with an additional four ripieno singers in the choir. A special feature is the wind part, which can be played by either an oboe or a tromba da tirarsi. According to the editor, it is also conceivable that the tromba is only used in the sonata.
