Our edition of the Concerto op. 17 makes this early work of Busoni's accessible for the first time. Busoni wrote this comprehensive work at the age of 12. Despite its early date of composition, which has left its mark in certain schematisms, the work already reveals the composer's extraordinary imaginative power, which is reflected in the individual conception of the musical form.
It is not clear whether Busoni had a chamber music work in mind or whether he was thinking more of an orchestral performance. The musical text does not allow for a clear conclusion either. Our edition is therefore available both as a piano quintet (KM 2191) and as an orchestral version (PB/OB 5160).
