Description

In 1871 Wagner was making decisive steps in his plan to have his monumental “Ring of the Nibelung” performed completely independently of the established cultural venues. He thus designated Bayreuth as the site for his festival, chose the architect for the interior and exterior decoration of the planned theater, and consulted with friends and patrons about the funds needed for the completely privately financed enterprise (the sum involved consisted of 300,000 thalers!). The production was announced for 1873, but soon one of the architects proved to be unsuitable, the money did not suffice, and a three-year delay became inevitable.

Next to his restless activity concerning the Bayreuth project, Wagner also completed “Siegfried”, worked on “Götterdämmerung”, wrote an orchestral work (“Kaisermarsch”) and edited his collection of writings. Parts of Wagner’s extensive correspondence are published for the first time in the present volume.
