The re-discovery of Hans Rott’s Symphony in E major in the late 1980s was considered a minor sensation (in the musicological world, that is). Gustav Mahler, who knew the work pretty well, later hailed Rott in his memoirs as “the founder of the new symphony […], as I understand it.”
Rott was a student of Anton Bruckner in Vienna, and his teacher’s influence is unmistakable. The symphony is not transmitted in a final fair copy; rather, the autograph has the character of a working manuscript and can even be described as sketchy in several places. Until 2006, the first movement of the symphony had survived only in a copy made by a copyist; the autograph was considered lost. It was not until 2006 that it resurfaced in Bruno Walter’s estate and was identified as a manuscript by Hans Rott. It is being analyzed for the first time for this new Urtext edition.

In Memory of Constantin Floros
With the passing of Constantin Floros, musicology has lost one of its most distinguished scholars, and the international study of Mahler one of its defining figures. A longtime professor at the University of Hamburg, he died last Friday at the age of 96. Breitkopf & Härtel has lost not only a longtime author and scholarly advisor, but also a highly valued colleague and companion along the way.
Floros maintained a close relationship with the publishing house for many decades. His three-volume monograph Gustav Mahler – The Symphonies, published by Breitkopf & Härtel between 1977 and 1985, is regarded as one of the foundational works of Mahler scholarship. He also supported the publisher’s eponymous edition series with great dedication. His profound knowledge of Mahler’s music contributed significantly to the series’ international success. Breitkopf & Härtel is deeply grateful to Constantin Floros for all he contributed.
Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and to all those who were close to him. We wish them strength and comfort in the time ahead.

Anyone who studies the composer's Symphony in E major — and better still, listens to it — will find it hard to believe it was created before Gustav Mahler brought his symphonic masterworks to concert life. The student of Anton Bruckner and highly esteemed colleague of Gustav Mahler died at the age of 26 in a psychiatric institution.
