Il Barbiere di Siviglia
Overture to the Opera
[orch] durée: 8' picc.1.2.2.2 – 2.2.3.0 – timp.perc – str
Description
Gioachino Rossini’s overture to his famous opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia is one of the most popular concert pieces in classical music and is frequently performed independently of the opera. However, the overture premiered alongside the complete work in 1816.
Although it does not use any themes from the opera itself – Rossini had originally composed the overture for his opera Aureliano in Palmira—it perfectly captures the lighthearted, humorous, and spirited mood of the story set in Seville. Based on a play by French dramatist Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, it tells the amusing tale of the clever barber Figaro, who helps Count Almaviva win the heart of the young Rosina.
