Description
This edition aims to help close the gap that currently exists in the range of suitable beginner’s music for double bass with piano accompaniment. In compiling this collection, the editor was guided by the desire to provide double bass students with a selection of short pieces for their first years of study that would stimulate their enthusiasm for playing and making music while also introducing them to some of the great composers and renowned double bass composers.
This edition is published in two volumes and covers the seven fundamentals: Volume 1 – half to 4th position, Volume II – 5th to 7th position. It is intended as a supplement to any school workbook.
The following notable double bassists, who also made a name for themselves as composers, are featured in the series:
Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), double bass player in the Dresden court orchestra; important composer, mainly of church music; conductor
Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708-1745), double bass player in the court orchestra of Frederick II in Berlin; composer of the “Berlin School” and conductor; organized “musical academies.”
Johann Matthias Sperger (1750-1812), double bass player in Vienna and Ludwigslust (Schwerin); one of the first famous double bass soloists;
