A Night in Venice
Overture to the Operetta – Urtext of the Johann Strauß Complete Edition
Vienna Version
[orch] duration: 7′ 2(picc.).2.2.2 – 4.2.3.0 – timp – hp – str
Description
In 1883, Johann Strauss needed three effective ingredients for the overture to his operetta, A Night in Venice: a triumphant maestoso march that seems to anticipate Pomp and Circumstance, then, a finely swinging waltz and, as a third ingredient, an elegiac 6/8 andante for the middle section, to which the obbligato harp lends a special touch. The waltz and march are repeated in shorter versions before a fanfare in F major signals the rise of the curtain and our view of the Grand Canal.
