Description
The Abbreviaturen for 13 solo strings or string orchestra was commissioned by the Zagreb Biennale in 1969 and premiered on May 6 in the opening concert.
I Microstructures, soundscapes, and clusters alternate, connected by a recurring minuet-like section. At the beginning and end, the tuning of the instruments takes on constructive significance.
II Aleatoric pizzicato groups and arco figures characterize the multi-part, free-form, scherzo-like movement.
III An attempt to develop a new type of expressive adagio: narrow and wide melodic arcs are accompanied by sound bands and accents.
IV A rhythmically aggressive finale in the form of a constantly intensifying, effective perpetuum mobile.
