J. N. Bach was a contemporary and distant cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach. The burlesque “Wine and Beer Hawker” is conceived as a series of recitatives in dialogue form and simple, song-like arias surrounded by short ensemble pieces. At the center of the piece is the hawker himself, who lived in Jena’s St. John’s Tower in the 18th century and whose task it was to hawk freshly brewed beer and other alcoholic beverages. He was a favorite target of students’ good-natured teasing.
