Theodor Uhlig was the illegitimate son of Friedrich August II of Saxony. From 1841, he was a violinist in the Dresden court orchestra, where he met Richard Wagner and became one of his closest friends and most reliable assistants. The manuscript of this quintet comes from the collection of the District Museum in Wurzen (near Leipzig) and reflects Uhlig's romantic zeitgeist in form and expression.
