Description
Kurt Atterberg wrote his first symphony between 1909 and 1911 and was thus only 24 years old when it was completed. As an early work, this symphony combines exuberant creativity with references to his models. Richard Strauss shines through, especially in the colorfulness of the music and the thematic condensation in the slow movement; it is not for nothing that Atterberg is often referred to as the “Swedish Richard Strauss.” The work follows a traditional four-movement form: a sonata movement is followed by the slow movement, which develops and condenses a single theme. The immediately following scherzo follows a strict four-bar periodic pattern. The finale takes up the slow movement in its slow introduction and already develops the theme of the rest of the movement.
The premiere in Gothenburg in 1912 was followed by performances abroad by renowned conductors (e.g. Carl Nielsen). Sometimes the symphony was received as a „sensation.“
