Description
The eighth of Kurt Atterberg’s nine suites was composed in 1931 and bears the full title “Suite pastorale in modo antico”. The composer thus refers to music “in the old Italian style,” for example by Arcangelo Corelli. In contrast to many of his other suites, which combine pieces from his stage music, Atterberg has laid out his eighth suite as a sequence of Baroque dances, in keeping with the word’s origin. He alludes to various dance types. The work concludes, for example, with a lively gavotte in even time. Likewise, there is an aria with a chant-like theme in the violins, based on a sparse accompaniment. While the tonal language is modeled on that of older time, Atterberg still shines through as a composer, for example, with a higher degree of dissonance than in the model.
