Contemporary Music for Flute solo
[fl]
Description
To publish a collection of solo pieces for flute means to make a selection from a very large offer of works, which presents essential aspects of contemporary composing. Thus, this collection includes works from the most recent output of composers from the German Democratic Republic, as well as works that have already become “classical”.
This booklet is intended to enable students at music academies and dedicated performers to supplement the existing repertoire or to make a new encounter with compositions for our instrument. Works of traditional notation and musicianship are juxtaposed with works that require greater knowledge of contemporary notation and a variety of playing techniques.
Footnotes and detailed explanations of the playing techniques at the end of the booklet make it easier to work through unfamiliar notated works. It seems important to me to point out that merely looking at or trying to assess the value or effect of the compositions by playing through them once is not sufficient.
The “Grasmückenstücke” by Paul Dessau are traditionally notated, it is a work that characteristically introduces our instrument. Edgard Varese’s “Density 21,5” – composed in 1936 – is a key work for all the following compositions for flute solo in terms of its dynamic exploration and first-time use of all registers of the flute. The compositions “Von d nach d” and “Dialog imaginär” by Georg Katzer show technical and tonal extensions that have been gained in the last decades.
The creation of the works by Edison Denissow, Georg Katzer, Friedrich Schenker, Helge Jung and Reiner Bredemeyer was suggested by me in connection with the work on this booklet. I would like to sincerely thank the authors for their cooperation. I would also like to thank the publisher and Reiner Kontressowitz, without whose support this booklet could not have been published.
