Description
Hermann Levi is considered one of the most influential conductors of the 19th century. His tireless dedication to Wagner’s work as the musical director of the Bayreuth Festival (1882–1894) has been the subject of numerous publications – precisely because of Levi’s Jewish heritage. In striking contrast to this, Levi’s own compositions receive hardly any attention today.
The Piano Concerto is dedicated to Levi’s first composition teacher, the Mannheim court music director Vincenz Lachner (1811–1893), who conducted the premiere with the composer at the piano. Lachner encouraged the sometimes-wavering Levi, saying: “Let your work go out into the world as it is [...], out into the sea of the public as quickly as possible! Few such concertos are afloat on the ocean of today’s musical world.”
This first critical Urtext edition of the Piano Concerto, now published by Breitkopf & Härtel, is also the first edition of the full score, as the original printing contained only the piano reduction and orchestral parts. With this edition, the judgment about Hermann Levi – and many other Jewish musicians – shaped by the spirit of the times and still partially persisting today, namely that his particular talent lay “in reproduction,” can finally be revised.
