Description
Richard Franck (1858–1938) faced entirely new challenges at the end of the 19th century. Caught between tradition and modernity, he appears to be oriented toward conservative ideals, but with facets that point to the epochal upheaval. His compositions reveal a style formed by classical models, perceived at the time as “moderately modern,” in which grace and elegant melodies are combined. A desire to experiment, chromatic boldness, and contrapuntal effects are just as much a part of this as a refined sensitivity.
The present sonatas for violin and piano were written between 1888 and 1903 and have hitherto occupied an outsider position in this genre. The musical language no longer really suited contemporary musical tastes, and the ‘late bloomers’ of High Romanticism were often only acknowledged in footnotes. With this critical new edition, the sonatas are being made available again for the first time in more than a hundred years in a form that does justice to their extensive and positive reception in recent years.
