Description
Kurt Atterberg composed “Suite No. 7” from his incidental music to Williams Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. He had written this incidental music for a performance of Shakespeare’s tragedy in Stockholm in 1926. To accompany a theatrical performance with music composed especially for the occasion may seem unusual from today’s perspective, but it was common practice for the longest time. Thus, in addition to his five operas, Atterberg also wrote a whole series of incidental music for plays, which he made available for the concert hall in the form of suites.
The already small instrumentation of the theater orchestra, which Atterberg had at his disposal for the performance in Stockholm, was further reduced by the composer in the arrangement of the suite by omitting the wind parts in favor of a pure string orchestra. The first performance of the suite was heard on Swedish radio in 1926, with the even smaller scored version given for string quartet. Both versions are playable with the available rental material (double bass ad libitum).
