Description
Like his famous symphony “From the New World”, Dvořák’s Violin Sonatina was also written in the United States. The themes of the Larghetto so strongly evoke the song melodies of the “New World” that this movement has been called “Indian Canzonetta” in certain arrangements.
Nevertheless, the composer never merely used the folk songs he found without giving them his personal touch.
Dvořák would certainly have been pleased to hear how this piece, too, has become popular in the meantime. He wrote to his publisher Simrock: “The sonatina is intended for young people (dedicated to my two children), but adults should also be able to derive some kind of enjoyment from it.”
