Hollywood Elegies
from the “Hollywood Songbook”
original scoring: vce, pno
Description
Los Angeles in the late 1930s was the involuntary meeting place of émigrés such as Brecht, Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and others. It was an era that found its artistic expression above all in Eisler’s “Hollywooder Liederbuch” (Hollywood Songbook), one of the few great song cycles of the 20th century. This is where Moritz von Gagern’s arrangement and the stage version by Schorsch Kamerun begins: “We want to capture the situation of the émigré artists during the McCarthy era on the basis of the atmosphere and texts of the ‘Hollywooder Liederbuch’ and transpose it into a form that, while remaining American, is still accessible to us today.”
