Maurice Ravel
Piano Concerto in G major

Urtext edition edited by Peter Jost · In cooperation with G. Henle Verlag

Ravel had considered writing a piano concerto as early as 1906, but only began serious work on it in 1929. Since its successful premiere in 1932, the Piano Concerto in G major has become a staple of the international concert repertoire.

Ravel himself described the work as “a concerto in the truest sense of the word,” written in the spirit of Mozart and Saint-Saëns. This Urtext edition is based on manuscripts, early prints, and a recording supervised by Ravel featuring the dedicatee Marguerite Long.

With an extensive preface and critical commentary, this edition provides a reliable foundation for study, performance, and interpretation.

Peter Gülke

In memory of Peter Gülke
(1934–2026)

The publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Gülke. The distinguished conductor, musicologist, and author passed away shortly before his 92nd birthday.

Peter Gülke was an exceptional figure. Whether as General Music Director in Weimar and Wuppertal or as chief conductor of the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, Gülke always saw himself as the “first servant of the music.” His interpretations were never an end in themselves, but always a search for the truth within the musical text.

His award of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2014 was a well-deserved recognition of a lifetime’s work that built bridges: between East and West, between theory and practice, and between archive and concert hall.

Despite his immense scholarship and numerous honors, he always remained marked by remarkable modesty and a subtle, often understated sense of humor.

Peter Gülke’s close connection with Breitkopf & Härtel lasted for more than 40 years. In him, we lose not only a valued author and editor, but an inspiring companion and friend of our publishing house.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and his close companions.
Thank you for everything, dear Peter Gülke!
