Description
In Rigolo for high voice, five instruments, and tape, a composition commissioned by the German Library in Rome in 1966, I attempted to utilize two elements in my composition. One was the emotion of laughter, and the other was the cult of prima donnas, particularly in Italian opera. With the renowned singer Carla Henius and the Nuremberg ars nova ensemble, I had the ideal performers. I recorded the tape at the Greek National Theater in Athens. At that time, I had been living in Greece for many years. – Laughter in all its variations: simple, malicious to the point of exaltation, mocking the behavior and affectation of the “primadonna assoluta.” The harsh departure of the musicians is composed into the piece.
