Description
Discovery of the Hidden Work
After the clarinet concerto “Accanto” is “Air” the second solo concerto for which Helmut Lachenmann has provided a reduced version of the orchestral tutti for the Ensemble Modern Orchestra, whereby he always prefers this reduced version to the original in the concert hall. The significance of these two concerts in Lachenmann’s orchestral oeuvre is further enhanced by the fact that they opened the “Lachenmann Perspectives” DVD series, which comprises a total of nine works. In the score of “Air”, the autograph solo part, which Lachenmann prepared in 1969 with the percussionist Michael W. Ranta independently of the orchestral score, is for the first time assessed in a detailed critical report.
