Description
In concert practice, it has become urgently necessary to combine the undeniable merits of François-Auguste Gevaert’s arrangement of Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major with the advantages of the original instrumentation. While Haydn uses only two oboes and two horns alongside the strings, Gevaert adds two flutes, two clarinets, and two bassoons. This often results in a loss of the clarity found in the original score. On the other hand, Gevaert’s streamlining and phrasing of the work, as well as its concertante conclusion, have become widely popular. We have therefore retained these well-established abridgements in restoring the work to its original instrumentation. Although the authorship of the concerto remains controversial, the original instrumentation is so transparent and consistent with Haydn’s style that its use in our concert practice represents a stylistic necessity.
