Description
During the work on his violin concerto Kurt Atterberg was in exchange with the violinists Sven Kjellström and Henri Mareau. It was thanks to the latter that Atterberg was recommended to Richard Strauss and Arthur Nikisch. The Violin Concerto was written within a few months in 1913 and was premiered in Gothenburg in 1914. The reserved reaction of the press there was due less to the lack of quality in the music than to the very reactionary attitude of the critic. The piece was received much more warmly at subsequent performances in Sweden and Germany.
This is virtuoso music for violin; technical bravura and lyrical passages are combined into a grand whole. A brilliant opening movement is followed by a melancholy slow movement and a fiery finale.
