Description
World première at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Wiener Philharmoniker under concert master Rainer Honeck
Commissioned by the Festival Wien Modern, by Konzerthaus Berlin and by Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck
The point of departure for this work was Bernhard Günther’s question as to whether I could imagine writing an orchestral work that was not intended to be conducted. I was immediately fired up, even though from the outset I was aware of the danger of failing in this venture. At the same time, I had long been planning to compose an orchestral piece without the high winds and low strings – a work that wavers virtually unbalanced around a stable percussionpiano center. I decided to use a slow, regular pulse structure. ‘Respiring’ rubatos with their fascinating blurriness are imperatively desirable and by themselves give rise to iridescent
‘scattered light’ from the multitude of those playing the music – hence the title.
Scattered Light is dedicated to Bernhard Günther.
