Description
Cesar Bresgen’s concerto for alto trombone was composed in 1980 for the Slovenian trombonist Branimir Slokar. It eschews pure virtuosity and focuses instead on melodic playing rich in timbre. The alto trombone, whose range corresponds roughly to that of the viola, changes its timbre characteristically in the high register to resemble that of woodwind instruments, an effect that is repeatedly brought to bear in the concerto. Bresgen’s trombone concerto was probably inspired by Bartók’s and Hindemith’s works for trombone. The folk influences in the classical three-movement concerto are unmistakable. In the very first movement, he quotes the Serbo-Croatian love song “Ljubiçice, ljubiçice.”
