Description
Hans Sandig’s cheerful animal song series was created for his own children’s choir on Radio DDR. The children are introduced to numerous exotic animals in entertaining songs accompanied by percussion and wind instruments. Richard Hambach tells many funny stories. Musically, Sandig follows the style of children’s songs, but also sprinkles in elements of dance music. Anticipation for the zoo comes with the opening song. The first animal encountered is the bear. The trombone and sustained chords of low brass instruments make him growl. The fat elephant makes all kinds of strange noises, created by trombone glissandi and the trumpet with a wah-wah mute. The choir makes him grunt, clatter, bawl, and neigh. An exotically colored melody accompanied by monotonous percussion suggests the monotonous desert trek of the camel. In a funny intermezzo, a rainworm that has strayed into the snake house is observed. Then suddenly the fire department appears. The veterinarian climbs the ladder to examine the giraffe’s long neck and cure its angina with Biomalz. To the melody of the entrance song, the children leave the zoo and resolve to return soon.
