Description
Kurt Atterberg is in good company with his compositional reception of the Turandot material, including Ferruccio Busoni and Giacomo Puccini. Unlike his two colleagues, however, the Swedish composer did not write an opera of Turandot, but rather incidental music for a play. All works are based on a play by the Venetian Carlo Gozzi from 1762. The model for it was again an epic from 12th century Persia. Friedrich Schiller penned a well-known adaptation of the material.
In the present suite, Atterberg has combined the best of his 1920 incidental music for the concert hall – a procedure that can be observed in numerous incidental music works from his pen.
