Befiehl du deine Wege
Motet
[mix ch]
Description
Among the few works by Johann Christoph Altnikol that can still be traced today, a previously unknown motet, Befiehl du deine Wege, now stands out in terms of expression and composition. It encompasses all twelve verses of Paul Gerhardt’s hymn in a varied sequence and not only reveals the “very special skill in composition” that Johann Sebastian Bach once confirmed to his “former dear pupil” and son-in-law Altnikol, but also shows itself to be influenced by the proximity of Bach’s spirit.
The first edition of this beautiful choral arrangement, which is certainly very welcome to our church choirs, is based on four parts and a score from the estate of Johann Gottlieb Petzold, who was probably a contemporary of Altnikol. Except for a few (now corrected) errors, it is well written by two different hands and is now part of the Manfred Gorke Collection (Eisenach).
