Description
No unitary plate number corresponds to the general score of the ballet Ma Mère l’Oye, as if Ravel’s publisher had never printed it. Furthermore, no printing contemporary with the first ballet’s performances has been located to date. In fact, the publisher simply bound together the orchestral score of the Cinq pièces enfantines and the additions composed specifically for the ballet: the Prélude et Danse du Rouet, as well as the « raccords » (interludes) connecting each of the pieces in the Children’s suite. The publisher did the same for the performance material.
To create this first and complete Urtext edition of the ballet, Jean-Paul C. Montagnier examined the original edition of the orchestration of the Cinq pièces enfantines and its autograph manuscript, as well as the first edition of the Prélude et Danse du Rouet. Since the original edition of the general score of the interludes could not be found, he also consulted the orchestral material printed after the first performances and took into account the corrections proposed by the Ravel conductor Manuel Rosenthal. This edition includes a thorough evaluation of the sources related to the ballet, in particular Ravel’s annotated piano version, the only official and – nearly - complete score of the work published as early as 1912, and the material used in the performances conducted by André Cluytens to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the composer’s death. The volume is supplemented by the two versions of the scenario written by Ravel and a comprehensive critical apparatus.
