Lieder der Weihnacht
Breitkopf & Härtel (ed.)
[pno(2mel/Vc ad lib. )]
vocal text: AlemánDescription
Christmas, a celebration of joy and peace, is an occasion for many music lovers to use their voices and instruments to perform the rich treasure trove of our traditional Christmas carols.
This celebration always provides an opportunity to put the musical skills acquired over the past year to good use. This is especially true for instrumentalists, who contribute significantly to the festive atmosphere by participating in the performance of the songs. The songs are published in a wide variety of versions; the arrangements are not suitable for any instrumental and vocal accompaniment that corresponds to the possibilities currently available; simply playing the piano parts is unattractive, and the most common transpositions make sight-reading difficult. In addition, most collections are tailored very specifically to a particular user group, so that the desire to have popular Christmas carols, which have been written over many centuries, available for use at any time can only be met by using several books or, in some cases, not at all.
This collection aims to fill this sensitive gap in the Christmas carol edition: it is a handbook for Christmas music-making. All the well-known songs sung during the Christmas season are included in their common versions and aim to preserve this valuable repertoire from further deterioration. Care has been taken to ensure that the words and melodies are valid and correct, and the most important variants have also been included. Each song has been arranged according to its content and formal character in such a way that domestic music groups gathering around the piano have a wide range of options.
The moderately difficult piano part does not exceed the singable range and can also be played alone, as the melody always comes to the fore as the upper voice. Unless otherwise noted, the two melody parts can be sung and also have the given song template as the leading voice. If melody instruments are used with or instead of the singing voices, violins and recorders should be used. It should be noted that soprano and alto flutes are best suited for this instrumentation and their notation must then be thought of as an octave higher; however, two alto flutes and any combination of instruments can also be used. The accompanying bass part, which is usually identical to the piano bass, can be added to the melody parts as a foundation, as well as reinforcing the foundation of the piano part; however, this can only be performed by a violoncello. The performance of the strophic setting can therefore be varied greatly with the help of voice groupings: piano alone; piano with one or two melody parts (vocal or instrumental) as well as with all ad libitum parts – possibly even with multiple performers;
