Joyful singing accompanied by the clinking of glasses, beer and wine, love as a matter of course, wanderlust and the pain of parting found their interpretation in student songs. Life at university was depicted. The contrast between college and pub, “student” and “fraternity” life played and continues to play a role in these songs, but so do freedom-loving tones and the socially critical confrontation of ‘poetry’ against “traditionalism and philistinism.”
The external occasion for compiling the songs presented in this booklet was the 425th anniversary of the University of Jena in 1983, which also has a long tradition in the field of music and student singing.
This songbook was one of the earliest and most important student songbooks of the 19th century, as it was one of the first songbooks of its kind to offer a high-quality compilation of both modern and historical student songs. It was created at the instigation and with the active participation of the Jena student body of the time, the “Burschenschaft” (fraternity).
