Description

Sibelius’s compositions for brass septet relate to the quick rise of civilian brass bands in Finland at the end of the 19th century. One brass band that quickly assumed an important role in the local community was founded in 1888 in the south-eastern coastal town of Lovisa, where the Sibelius family used to spend their summer holidays. Sibelius composed Andantino and Menuetto, as well as the Overture in E flat major, for the Lovisa Brass Septet, which first performed the works at local festive events in 1891. Probably the Overture in F minor, dating from summer 1889, was also composed for the septet, although no direct documentation of its composition process survives.

A significant context for brass band playing in Sibelius’s time was the tradition of holding national song and music festivals organized by the Finnish-speaking society for popular education, Kansanvalistusseura. Sibelius composed Allegro in 1889 for a composition competition of Kansanvalistusseura, arranged to enhance the repertoires of the brass septets with new works based on Finnish folk music melodies. The brisk march Tiera for brass septet and percussion, borrowing its title from a character in the national epic Kalevala, also relates to the festivals, as it was first published by Kansanvalistusseura to be performed at the festival organized in Helsinki in 1900, where it was realized as a joint performance of almost two hundred musicians.

The scores in this volume are mostly based on Sibelius’s autographs and scribal manuscripts –Tiera is the only work which was published during Sibelius’s life. In addition to the completed works, the volume includes two transcriptions of Sibelius’s draft scores. The draft for the Overture in E flat major shows interesting differences in comparison with the later surviving scribal copies of the work. The draft for a version of Partiolaisten marssi for brass septet and percussion from 1918 is published for the first time in this volume.
