Description
Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony addresses the fundamental question of human existence: victory over fate or victory of fate? The underlying “per aspera ad astra” dramaturgy culminates in triumphant certainty. However, after conducting the premiere in St. Petersburg in 1888, Tchaikovsky was overcome with massive doubts about the work. Only extensive revisions he made for his final performance in Hamburg in 1889 brought about a change of heart, including two leaps and a cymbal crash in the finale. “It has ceased to seem ugly to me. I have grown to love it again.” However, the symphony only became part of the repertoire after Tchaikovsky's death, thanks in large part to Arthur Nikisch's efforts. Christoph Flamm's edition is the first critical edition of the work ever published and meets the highest quality standards. For the first time, it accounts for all surviving sources, including Tchaikovsky's Hamburg revisions, as documented by Nikisch and Mengelberg, among others. That is, as far as reconstructable and therefore optional. Markus Poschner's recording with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana offers an opportunity to discuss the symphony's legendary “Nikisch cymbal crash” and the two leaps in the finale.
