Music by Women Composers
in Urtext Editions

A look through Breitkopf & Härtelʼs complete 1902 catalog reveals a surprising number of names attributed to women composers. While the published repertoire primarily consisted of piano and vocal music, larger-scale works also catch the eye, such as an oratorio by Elfrida Andrée and opera excerpts by Maria Antonia Walpurgis of Bavaria.

Much of this material was lost during the war and remained inaccessible throughout the period of a divided Germany. In the 1990s, Breitkopf & Härtel published the first Urtext editions of songs by Clara Schumann and Fanny Hensel. Continually building on this momentum, nearly all published works by women composers (up to 1945) are now available in Urtext editions.
