Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext
Critical. Transparent. Reliable.
Our label “Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext” is based on the premise of critical music editing. Our editors are guided by these core principles:
Critical
We exploit, scrutinize, evaluate.
Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext takes all relevant sources into account. Besides autographs, copies and first editions, these sources often include contemporary performance materials and correspondence indicating the composerʼs input, particularly regarding first editions. The hierarchy of sources is explained in the critical report.
Transparent
We analyze, document and communicate.
All divergences between the edition and the primary source(s) are documented in the critical report and, where necessary, indicated in the music text via footnotes, small print and square brackets. This ensures full transparency regarding editorial decisions.
Consistent
We offer confident decisions for musical practice.
We do not merely list source divergences; we also provide solutions for their execution. All parts belonging to one work are carefully coordinated in terms of content to ensure smooth rehearsals and concerts.
